‘Mama.ste’ Mother’s Day Free Yoga Class to Celebrate Healthy Moms on May 12th
Urban Active honors moms this Mother’s Day with great escapism…Mama.ste
Louisville, KY - Urban Active will be honoring moms this Mother’s Day with ‘Mama.ste’ free yoga class to celebrate being a healthy and happy mom. Many moms are stressed out, cranky and exhausted from taking care of their children and their households. Urban Active wants mothers to take a deep breath and say Om. Repeat. Yoga is the perfect mental escape for moms on this Mother’s Day with ‘Mama.ste’ at 10:20 AM on Saturday, May 12th at Urban Active.
Yoga is considered a mental escape for moms. The benefits of yoga for mothers include flexibility, range of motion, builds strength, improves posture, massages all organs of the body, it’s a complete detoxification, better circulation, improves emotional health, lowers blood pressure and more.
Moms can take three yoga tools from the ‘Mama.ste’ class to implement immediately and conveniently into their daily lives. Whether sitting in carpool, running errands or at the house, moms can incorporate these three yoga practices:
1) Deep Breathing: Most of the breaths that the majority of people take throughout the day are quick, shallow breaths. Pranayama, or breath control, is one of the five principles in yoga. When you take the time to focus on your breath, you cannot help but become present in the moment. One easy technique is to take a full breath through your nose, hold it for a count of three, and then release through your nose. Repeat three more times.
2) Music: Mostly everyone has heard the adage, "Music calms the savage beast." The same can be said for moms and children as well! There are many different types of yoga music, which is often called new age, as well as chanting or crystal bowls. Simply having calming music in the background, or flicking it on before a temper tantrum strikes, can help save the day!
3) Yoga moves: The great thing about these yoga poses is that you can do them with your children.
• Vipartia karani or leg up the wall pose can help calm the mind and ease anxiety. Plus, you can easily read a book to your child during the pose.
• Balasana or child's pose is another instant relaxing and calming pose.
• Savasana or corpse pose is one of the most basic yoga moves. Your child (or maybe even you) can be tempted to fall asleep while practicing it.
Urban Active St. Matthews: 4900 Shelbyville Rd – Louisville, KY 40207 (502) 894-9911
LOUISVILLE, KY - Urban Active is joining forces with the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) – in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move!- to help America become physically active and improve their diet. As part of this year’s 9th Annual Get Active America! program, Urban Active will also encourage its communities to pursue the President’s Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) by being active and making more healthy food choices for 5 days a week for at least 6 out of 8 weeks. In doing so, Urban Active is offering FREE workouts for the entire month of May along with a complimentary Jumpstart Personal Training Session for its local non-members.
The goal is to help make exercise more accessible to millions of Americans, and motivate them to take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle. The Get Active America! program is part of a continuous effort by the health club industry to change the direction of the nation’s health. In its 9th year, the program has aligned itself with the President’s Active Lifestyle Award (Obama’s PALA+) and the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative.
The PALA+ challenge is a commitment to being active five days a week and working on several nutritional goals for at least six weeks. For adults, that includes 30 minutes of physical activity a day, while for children that is 60 minutes per day. For more information, please visit www.presidentschallenge.org.
Since First Lady Michelle Obama launched her Let’s Move! campaign in 2010, a number of targeted efforts within the initiative have been introduced in an effort to reduce the nation’s rate of childhood obesity. There are now 790 Let’s Move groups in 331 cities in the US and overseas. Additional information is available at www.letsmove.gov
Obesity levels in the United States continue to rise. According to IHRSA, over 35 percent of adults are obese while obesity rates in children tripled over the past two years. To be considered obese, a person has a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. With the extra weight comes a myriad health issue — obesity contributes to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, and some cancers.
“Urban Active realizes how challenging it is to make healthy lifestyle changes and how valuable it is to have the support of those around you,” says Coby DeVary COO of Urban Active. “We are here to offer the tools to those in our communities who want to improve their well-being and acquire more physically active lives. The past two years that trainer Dale Romans has started a horse in the Kentucky Derby, he and his family have hosted a small after-party at their home in south Louisville. It’s a relaxed affair — homemade brisket, cold beer, horse-racing stories into the wee hours — the close to a long day powered on adrenaline.
On Wednesday, May 2, at Churchhill Downs the post position draw will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. ET and be able to be veiwed NBC Sports Network.
The majority of horses that have won the Kentucky Derby had the inside track. Upon visiting the derby's website, you can see which post positions have had the best luck.
The post positions that have succeed the most are No. 1, No. 4, No. 5, No. 8 and No. 10. After the 10th spot, the number of wins is a significant drop off.
Last year's Kentucky Derby winner came from post position No. 16, so of course it isn't impossible to win from out there, but it is much harder.
Keep an eye on which positions the top horses, such as Union Rags, Creative Cause and Bodemeister, end up being placed at. Churchill Downs
We're switching up our May issue's launch party date, as it will not be the first Wednesday in May, but on the last Wednesday in April. Two launch parties in one month just means twice the celebration!
Join us at The Galt House in the Fountain Room for the launch of May's 'Real Estate & Most Valuable Homes' issue. Come and enjoy free appetizers, drink specials, and pick up free copies of the magazine!
Another addition to this launch party is that Abbey Road on the River will be co-hosting this event. Guests will enjoy Beatles-inspired acoustic music by Nervous Melvin and the Mistakes. Abbey Road on the River takes place in Louisville on May 24th through May 28th.

Louisville Magazine's staff shared its reasons for loving the Kentucky Derby in the April issue. Now it's your turn...
In collaboration with Kynecktid, we took to the streets to discover your 138 top reasons for loving Derby.
On Tuesday, April 3, at 4 p.m., 10 photographers working for Louisville Magazine set up at 10 places around the city. The idea was to provide snapshots of life in Louisville on an ordinary weekday when so many of us are hunkered down in front of computer screens, in cubicles, in our heads, oblivious to anything beyond the immediate. The magazine's photographers were instructed to shoot from 4 p.m. to 4:05 p.m.. That was it.
