Louisville news: Bang bang my baby shot me down edition [News roundup]

A summary of local news for June 14, 2010

  • An AMA-affiliated panel says that Rand Paul (who was in town over the weekend for the National Gun Day show) isn’t board certified to practice optometry—something his patients likely didn’t figure out until AFTER they were fitted for new glasses and could finally read the papers on his wall.

Pirates take over the Fraziaaaaar! [Downtown/Old Louisville]

What do the Guinness book of world records, Groupon, and one of our writers in stocks have in common? The Frazier Museum.

One of the great fears about geolocation in phones is that we'll all end up living in a Phillip K Dick inspired world where every time we pass a store at the mall we're barraged with text messages offering a coupon only good for the next fifteen minutes. So far, my beloved iPhone has been spared that bit of dystopian drama, but even I have to admit the concept itself is sound. I like the idea of local, timely deals from places I know won't harass me until the end of time once they get their grubby hands on my email address.

Ferdinand's Ball - Oaks Eve [Kentucky Derby]

Not all Derby Parties are created equal.  Ferdinand's Ball, Thursday April 29th at the Frazier Museum, is the first Derby Party all about the horses.
The Ferdinand's Ball, hosted by Access Hollywood's Maria Menounos, is not just another Kentucky Derby Party. Yes, there will be plenty of celebrities, hats, cocktails, and food, but this Derby Party is all about the horses. Considering the Kentucky Derby is a horse race, I think this is wonderful!

Louisville-area freebies for veterans and active-duty military on Veterans Day 2009

Three local businesses honor men and women of the military with free admission this Wednesday

Veterans' Day, the holiday on which we honor those who've sacrificed so much for us--unless we choose to sacrifice the holiday itself in exchange for getting off the day after Thanksgiving. Honor, duty and freedom are great, but they won't get you 25 percent off at early bird specials.

Here are some area venues that are honoring our veterans--mostly through free admission.

Churchill Downs
700 Central Ave.
11:30 a.m.-6 p.m.
Admission for live racing and simulcast is free for all veterans and active-duty military members with a military ID.

Frazier Museum revisits fun from the past with Fontaine Ferry exhibit

Well before Kentucky Kingdom was the glimmer of a thought, another Louisville amusement park created thousands of memories and countless hours of fun.

Do you remember Sam and Sue? How about Hilarity Hall and Gypsy Village? What was your favorite ride? The Comet or The Whip? How many hours did you spend riding the Fontaine Ferry Carousel or swimming in the pool?

From 1905 to 1969, Fontaine Ferry Park represented the very best of times for hundreds of thousands who enjoyed innocent hours of entertainment in the West Louisville amusement park on the banks of the Ohio River. For others, it was a sign of the times – a place they weren’t allowed access because of the color of their skin.
