The 18th annual Latin American Film Festival kicks off next Wednesday, September 14 with Marimbas del Infierno (Marimbas from Hell), the first of a series of films exploring social issues in Guatemala. Films will be screened at Bellarmine University and at the University of Louisville.

According to Manual Medina, who is the chairman of the festival and a UofL faculty member in the Spanish section of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, College of Arts and Sciences, says the theme of the festival, “Reel Guate,” brings into focus the Guatemalan urban landscape and addresses current social issues in that country.

The festival includes 10 full-length films and five short films, all in Spanish with English subtitles. All films and events are free and open to the public.

An opening night reception for the festival will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 in the Chao Auditorium at UofL’s Ekstrom Library, with Marimbas del Infierna director Julio Hernandez as the guest of honor.

The festival runs through October 2. For more information, including a full schedule, see http://medina502.com/reelguate/index.php. For more information about Reel Guate, contact Medina at 852-0501 or medina502@gmail.com.
