The 2012 Louisville Concours d'Elegance Preview [Society]

The fifth anniversary of the Louisville Concours d'Elegance is upon us, and this year brings a few changes to the annual automotive event, kicking off this Friday at 21c Museum Hotel with a private welcoming reception for this year's judges, sponsors, exhibitors and invited guests.

For 2012, the benefiting charity is Kosair Children's Hospital, the commonwealth's only free-standing pediatric hospital, with 263 beds serving nearly 140,000 children throughout Kentuckiana on a yearly basis. Cadillac and Porsche Racing will be the two marquees honored during the Concours, where everything from the massive fins of the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado to the mad engineering behind the Porsche 917 will be on display for Sunday's attendees to see. Fourteen classes of automotive art from the past 100 years will be vying for to be the winners of their class, while three exhibition classes -- ranging from fire trucks and early Cadillacs to military vehicles -- and others with their own motorized pieces will lend color to the infield at Churchill Downs.

Speaking of Churchill Downs, a "Dawn at the Downs" champagne brunch will take place Saturday morning, allowing guests to take in the morning workouts of the racehorses who call the Twin Spires their home away from home. Tickets for the brunch range from $50 for exhibitors to $75 for general admission. This will be followed by a gathering at the home of Matt and Fran Thornton in the Glenview Historic District Saturday evening, culminating in the Concours itself Sunday morning. Tickets are $15 per person in advance/$20 at the gate for general admission; children 12 under enter free of charge. VIP admission is $100 per person. Gates open at 11 a.m.
