Abbey Road On The River (AROTR) is the world's largest Beatles inspired festival, and it's here in Louisville this Memorial Day weekend. For the sixth year, AROTR will be at the Galt House Hotel and the surrounding yards. The festival starts today and has a variety of bands and activities ending Monday. The inspiration is not only the music, but the peace, love, and non-violence vibe that the Beatles spread throughout the world.
There is a wide variety of ticket prices and currently the website is offering a $5 off coupon. All under 21s are free when accompanied by an over 21 advanced ticket holder (ticket purchased before May 26th).
Among the activities is a singing contest, an all night sing along, free guitar lessons, a Yellow Submorons Parade, and a costume contest. What promises to be one of the most interesting activities, is the premiere of the film "Let Him Be". Two film students discovered a tape found inside an old video camera at a garage sale in Northern Ontario. The tape contained a clip of a old man who looked like an older John Lennon. The students became fixated on the idea that Lennon could have staged his own death to live a life of peace in Canada. The film is a first-hand experience of the possibility that history deceived us.
I will be attending, along with my Beatles-loving mother. It'll be really interesting to be there with someone who grew up during the Beatles era and get her perspective on the festival. Tickets are still for sale online or at the door. Everyone could use more peace and love in their life.
