Actors Theatre presents Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
Print this page

Actors Theatre of Louisville opens its 2012-2013 season with what is arguable Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo and Juliet.

But don’t go to the show looking for a production set in late-16th century England; or even in 15th century Verona, where The Bard is thought to have set his popular tragedy.

Director Tony Speciale, Louisville native and YPAS graduate, has set the stage for a contemporary retelling, aimed at highlighting the power the 400-year-old words have to reverberate in today’s society.

Speciale is no stranger to Shakespeare, having been praised by the New York Times for his “propulsive staging.”

In case high school English escapes you, Romeo and Juliet are two young lovers whose families are entrenched in a bitter feud which would give pause to Kentucky’s Hatfields and McCoys.

Their quest to be together knows no bounds as they risk everything for their love.

Romeo and Juliet opens September 4 and runs through September 24. Tickets start at $35 for most performances; however, Actors Theatre has several discounts available on their website.

Tickets can be purchased online or by calling the box office at 502-584-1205.
