Your kids can only watch so many movies and swim season is almost over.  Are you running out of ideas to keep the brood stimulated?  Try an art day.  For very little cash, you can visit some of Louisville's hottest art galleries and then have the kids create their own.

You've probably already enjoyed the wonder that is Art Sparks in the basement of the J.B. Speed Museum, but if not, it is worth checking out.  For five bucks (or free if you complete the library's reading program), your family can run around in a peasant costume, create water color paintings, African rubbings, or experiment with multi-media art.  The best thing is, you can be in and out in about an hour.

Don't forget to stop in at one of the galleries on Market or the Glassworks (if you're brave enough to let little hands and feet enter such a space) or better yet, try walking through 21C.  My kids loved the modern art there--they actually talked about it three days later.  Check out the basement with exposed pipes and audio that projects the sounds of the building's infrastructure (including the plumbing and footsteps).  The smoke rings and the bathroom were also a big hit.

On the way home, stop by Artist and Craftsman Supply on the corner of Barrett Ave. near Lynn's.  They always have great deals.  I left with a package of premium grade paper, three acrylic colors, brushes, and two small canvasses for my little artists to experiment with, all for around $20.  Before nap time, they created a masterpiece, and then mom put her feet up.  How's that for getting our culture on?
