This weekend, Amvets Post 9 will inaugurate its first female Commander, Susie Siewart Bruner, since its start in 1942. Bruner has been working for the Amvets for a year and a half as a volunteer (all 15 people that work at the post are volunteers) and will soon make her transition from Financial Officer to Commander. The post services 105 veterans, although only a third comes to vote.
The Amvets post holds bingo every Sunday, have a fish fry with karaoke every Friday night, rents out the bingo room, and holds various special events throughout the year. Commander-Elect Bruner is proud of Post 9, but is looking to broaden the post's horizons. "I want us to be more a neighborhood place," says Bruner, and she has already gotten started.
On June 5th, GoGreen Germantown will plant redbud trees at the Amvets post, and Dan McMahon, proprietor of Danny Mac's Pizza and the moderator of the Germantown-Schnitzelburg facebook page, has recruited volunteers to help refurbish the post's horseshoe pit, which will make the place more inviting. Pizza will be provided by Danny Mac's Pizza and others will be bringing food so this event has transformed into a potluck.
Bruner is excited that there is renewed interest in the post because this will help the post become more of a community staple, and hopefully attract more veterans. While the post has been quick to support things like the Germantown baseball league and sending money to Haiti relief, the Amvet is for veterans so Bruner hopes to see an increased enrollment.
It should be easy to get coverage of the May 29th swearing-in ceremony as most local news networks are expected to attend, and you can join the June 5th clean-up effort by calling (502) 296-7757.
