The Arts Council of Southern Indiana will be hosting the Monarch Butterfly Celebration "Beyond Borders" on July 28th from 1pm-6pm at their headquarters located in the historic district of New Albany at 820 E. Market St. This event is free to the public thanks to the funding by the Southern Indiana Botanical Society, PNC, Turkey Ridge Farm, The Arts Council, Endris Jewelers and Mike and Beth Pattison. The idea was brought to Julie Schweitzer, Executive Director of the Arts Council, by Mike Pattison, President of the Southern Indiana Botanical Society. This will be the second year the Arts Council has hosted the group art exhibit, “Beyond Borders”. In a press release on the Arts Council's Facebook page Schweitzer says, “It’s a great match and now an annual event... It’s an exhibit about monarchs as interpreted by artists, and it’s about the wonderful gardens on our property, where we grow milkweeds. Milkweeds are the only plants the caterpillars will eat so they’re necessary for the monarchs’ survival."

The Arts Council will host the Indiana Arts Commissions, Regional Initiative Grant award ceremony at 3:30 p.m. There will also be a dedication of the Arts Council's renovated carriage house, which is now used for art classes. The renovation was made possible by Republic Bank, LG&E, Thomas Keith Peterson Memorial Fund, Pat Harrison, First Harrison Bank, River Valley Bank, and Your Community Bank. There will also be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new limestone garden bench that was carved by four members of Boy Scout Troop 4080 and assisted by sculptor Larry Beisler. Schickel Masonry Restoration donated the limestone.

Some activities individuals and families can enjoy include assisting Paul Hassfurder in creating an arbor on the property, listening to live music by Field of Kings and Waitin' for Dave, educational talks by members of the Louisville Orchid Society, stone carving, children's art projects, PNC table with give-away items, viewing of Mike Pattison's butterfly collection, and light refreshments.

The Arts Council of Southern Indiana would like to thank Duke Energy for funding the event and garden, and to Padgett, Inc. for funding the art exhibit and garden.
