As the volleyball season came to a close in Kentucky, once again Assumption grabbed the title of state champions after defeating Notre Dame high school; this trophy certainly continues the volleyball legacy at the Catholic school.

The Rockets met up in the semi-finals for probably their toughest matchup in the tourney as they squared off with Mercy Academy. Quite possibly the best volleyball rivalry in the state didn’t disappoint either as the two teams fought, scratched and spiked their way into five tough sets, where Assumption was able to beat out their long standing rival at the end of the day.

This victory led the ladies’ to meet up with the Notre Dame Pandas of Park Hills, Kentucky in the championship played locally at Valley high school.

Meanwhile, Mercy Academy has reason to celebrate on their own, the bested Louisville private school featured Courtney Crable who was named Kentucky’s Miss Volleyball this year. Crable has been a major factor in Mercy’s tenacity and victories and has already signed to play for Auburn in this coming season.

In addition to Crable other Louisville volleyball players who were named to the first-team All State roster included Sacred Heart’s Ashley Askin (who is playing in college at Georgia Tech), Assumption’s Alyssa Cavanaugh (who will be playing at Western Kentucky) and Alexa Filley (who will join Crable at Auburn), and Christian Academy’s Carolina Rassenfoss in 2-A.

What does this say for the future of Louisville volleyball? Well, it’s gonna take a heck of a lot to knock off Assumption and Mercy who have become Volleyball royalty over the years.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
