Author to describe ‘Marine’s Path to Peace’ [Colleges]

Enjoy Three Cups of Tea (factual accuracy aside)? Former Marine Capt. Rye Barcott, author of a new book about co-founding a Kenyan slum relief effort (really) and how it affected his military service, will talk about his work and memoir during a free, public lecture this coming Wednesday, April 27 at the University of Louisville.
The hourlong talk on Barcott’s memoir, It Happened on the Way to War: A Marine’s Path to Peace (Bloomsbury USA), will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Chao Auditorium in the Ekstrom Library on the Belknap Campus. The discussion will be followed by a book signing.

It Happened on the Way to War, a 2011 TED Conference book selection, details Barcott’s co-founding of the nongovernmental organization Carolina for Kibera a decade ago as a student at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Later, as a Marine serving in Iraq, Bosnia and Africa, he continued his work with the organization.
Carolina for Kibera is considered an example of the participatory development movement that works to develop a new generation of leaders within unlikely places—in this case, the Kibera neighborhood of Nairobi. Barcott, in conjunction with the organization, has been named Hero of Global Health by TIME and a 2006 Person of the Year by ABC World News.

The lecture and book signing afterward are sponsored by the UofL College of Arts and Sciences and its peace studies program, ROTC and military science program, social change program and the Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society.
