TEAM SWEATY SHEEP - say it out loud, TEAM SWEATY SHEEP!
Every time I say it I chuckle just a little, but this "active ministry" group is no laughing matter. Oh sure they have fun, water balloon fights, crazy races and challenges, but their message and work go much deeper. This Saturday, December 22nd, at 3:30 TEAM SWEATY SHEEP is staging a MERRY CHRISTMAS 5K to benefit Louisville homeless. RACE DETAILS HERE:
If you've been in a bit of a funk, as have I, over all the mind-numbing events of the past week, this story maybe just what you need. Ryan Althaus thinks so, "at SWEATY SHEEP we're all about "Re-CREATION through Recreation", Team Sweaty Sheep is a group of active, community minded church-goers and non-church goers doing outreach. As Ryan continued, the appeal of SWEATY SHEEP became clear. "We are evolving church, some churches want to make you fit into their box - but we want to make "church" a part of your life's passion, like running or biking. We have folks who go to a particular church and they use this as an active way to make a difference, to practice their faith by helping. Then we have people who say THIS is their church.". This race, the MERRY CHRISTMAS 5K is their effort to call attention to, and do something for the homeless during the holidays.
2 minutes to understand what SWEATY SHEEP is all about:
This Saturday's race is not your typical 5K (3.1 Miles). First, it starts in the afternoon, 3:30p at the Belle of Louisville and will be run along Waterfront Park, down to the new Pedestrian Bridge and back. It will feature church choirs every mile. There is an EGGNOG Challenge, drink a cup of eggnog after each mile of the race. You won't get a tee-shirt or finisher's medal as is typical in most races because all proceeds from entry fees (only $10 till Noon Friday at Fleet Feet, Ken Combs Running Store or Blue Mile - then $15 to register the day of the event) will be donated. And when it's over you get to sit down for dinner with some in homeless community and discover the stories and hear about some of Louisville's most vulnerable citizens. The is an optional worship service after the dinner.
So maybe you're thinking it's time to put your "bleating" heart into action and "DO SOMETHING POSITIVE" in this world...here's your chance, The Sweaty Sheep are calling....
