The Mayor's Healthy Hometown Movement, Kentucky Proud, and Pennyrile Allied Community Services are sponsoring a series of events this summer at Louisville's neighborhood Farmers' Markets. 24 Chefs will compete across the city to create "Winning Market Meals," dishes created from fresh, local ingredients that can be easily recreated by cooks at home in approximately 30 minutes. They will be judged on the originality, nutrition and overall taste, and how easily the recipe could be replicated by the average home cook. The competition is part of an effort to promote healthy, home cooked meals and good nutrition. Food away from home went from 25% of food spending to 45% between the late '70s and mid '90s. Contribution of calories from food away-from-home went from 18% to 34%. Away from home foods are shown to be higher in fat and lower in fiber and calcium than home foods. (USDA data, Lin et al., AG Bull 750, 1999.) Farmers’ Markets provide a unique opportunity to reconnect people with their food. Customers are more likely to interact with the farmers’ and producers of the food they are purchasing. As customers exchange recipes, haggle for the best tomato, and experience the taste of produce picked at the peak of its flavor, an important cultural experience that seems to have slipped away from us is regained. With that experience, customers learn the value of returning to healthier foods and eating habits. The Beechmont Open Air Market is held at Wellington and Southern Parkway each Saturday from 8-12noon. The Cook-off will be held on Saturday August 2nd from 9:30-10:30AM. Robert Mallow, Personal Chef and sous Chef for U of L University Club; Aaron Wilson, new Chef for Horseshoe Casino, and Chef Nancy Russman, Instructor at JCC will compete in this event. Shopping begins at 9:30AM for 1/2 hour, cooking begins at 10:00AM for 1/2 hour and judging begins around 10:30AM. Head out and see what the Chefs come up with as they use the ingredients from our Market to create a taste treat made from local produce. Enjoy live music with a variety of produce, crafts, cut flowers and bedding plants for sale. It's harvest time and the crops are in with more and different produce each week.
