Free workshops on raising chickens and beekeeping in the city--two other reasons (besides the plant Sale and Garden Expo that starts at 9am) to visit the Louisville Nature Center on Saturday!
Is it legal to raise chickens and keep bees within Louisville limits? You bet. Urban farming is on the rise--just take a stroll through Germantown to note coops and bee boxes posted up in folks' backyards. In my neck of Louisville a belligerent rooster can be heard at all hours of the day. Personally, I'm tackling a chicken coop this weekend, but these workshops aren't to be missed for a healthy start on your own urban homestead.
"Backyard Chicken Basics" will be hosted at the Louisville Nature Center. Learn how to raise a backyard flock. Safety, housing and local ordinances will be discussed. Class is for ages 13 and up. It begins at 10am and ends at 10:30am.
"Urban Beekeeping" will also be hosted at the Louisville Nature Center the same day. Class will cover how to jump-start a backyard beehive and what equipment is needed to do so. Information on finding local mentors and local beekeeper groups will be provided. It begins at 11am and ends at 11:30am.
For further information on either class call (502) 458-1328 between 9am and 4pm Monday through Saturday.
Again, both classes are free!
