Bluegrass music, burgoo, beer, and sunshine

My husband and I never considered ourselves Bluegrass Fans until seeing a bluegrass trio play in a small brewery in Nashville last Spring. We had just driven across the country after leaving Los Angeles, the city where he grew up and where I had been living for five years. A city where we didn't experience much country or bluegrass music.

After our first summer in Louisville, we had enjoyed enough live bluegrass music to call ourselves fans, so we happily dragged two Los Angeles visitors to last year's Labor Day weekend Bluegrass Festival at the Water Tower.

Picture this: Wide open blue skies, the river lazily rolling in the background, cicadas humming in the trees, arts and crafts vendors slinging handmade jewelry, and a group of talented musicians plucking and crooning away while you sip on an ice cold beer and munch on some finger-licking barbecue.

Sounds pretty nice, right? That's why I'm happily attending again this weekend with more out of town guests. The weather looks promising, although a bit on the warm side on Saturday and Sunday. The highlight will probably be the Sunday night act, the Fiddleheads, who were featured on America's Got Talent.

The festival runs through Labor Day weekend: Saturday and Sunday 5-11, Monday 1-7. Admission is $7 before 6pm and $10 after. Parking is plentiful and free. I recommend bringing lawn chairs and/or a blanket, and possibly some bug spray and allergy medicine if you're a California transplant like my husband!
