Lunch, Brunch, and a Good Munch
As usual, last week when a coworker suggested we go out to lunch, I struggled to say no despite a tight schedule. In lieu of giving up an opportunity to try a new Louisville eatery, I asked that we go somewhere close to our office. They kindly obliged and we met at The Main Street Cafe. To my foodie shame, I had never heard of the place.
I was really pleasantly surprised by the modern downtown lunch spot, tucked away on the 2nd floor of 217 East Main Street, with parking in the back to boot. The menu hosted a lot of interesting breakfast, lunch, and brunch items, available all day. Much of it was deli treats like house made pastrami and corned beef, available by the pound or as a sandwich. In addition to those carnivorous treats, they had locally raised chorizo, sorghum bacon, and savory bacon (cured in black pepper and anise) available to order or by the pound. For vegans or vegetarians, I spied a sandwich with “eggplant bacon”, but have yet to try it.
They also had simple, affordable, and inventive items like grapefruit brulee or spicy chicken biscuit with Kentucky sorghum and sea salt. The breakfast menu had the usual coffee shop fare like bagels or croissants. For a bigger appetite, tuck into unique items like arepa and eggs or a brownie waffle. To rinse it all down, there is a full espresso menu, smoothies, loose leaf teas, and juice.
I plan to go back. I like the feel of the place. Because of it’s second floor location, it feels like you’ve stepped out of Louisville for a minute. The food was a total hit or satisfactory, but no misses. I loved my donut hole sized beignets, sweet and citrusy grapefruit brulee and was satisfied with my melty corned beef sandwich with braunsweiger.
