Built to Spill has been going strong for about 20 years. You read that correct…20 years! Having released 7 studio albums to date, they have garnered an incredible following and don’t see any stopping in the future. I had the fortune to speak with front man, and founding member, Doug Martsch recently and he was really just thrilled to be on the road and playing music, ‘doing our thing’.
According to Martsch, Built to Spill has been to Louisville a couple of times but unfortunately hasn’t had any time to really take in any of the city. Of course I wanted to know how a band has been able to stick around for so long and basically their philosophy is to just ‘keep doing what we’re doing!’ Now, you were probably hoping for some formula that has made other bands with such tenure last, but for this bunch it really comes down to just loving what they do. The last few albums have broken into the top 100 in the US, but good news is there ‘may’ be a new studio album working for release in the next ‘year or so’.
Doug was really gracious in speaking as he was on the tour bus, on the road, and even delved slightly into his latest musical delights. Not being the biggest fan of ‘the newer stuff’, he did go on to divulge that the other two bands touring with them are a couple of his favorites so be sure and get there early to check out Helvetia & Sister Crayon. As far as what to expect for the show tomorrow, the safe bet is that we can count on Built to Spill to ‘do their thing’ which has been tried and tested far longer than you’ve been thinking about trying bath salts.
