Calling All Green Thumbs!

The beautiful landscaping found throughout the zoo is a product of many hours of care, deep dedication and in-depth knowledge.  If you’re a skilled gardener, now’s your chance to adopt certain sites in the zoo to care for on your own!

As all great ideas go, this was a product of teamwork and vision.  According to Diane Taylor, Coordinator of Volunteers, “The inspiration for the new Adopt-a-Garden program came from Louisville Horticulture and Development Department Volunteer Anne Ramsey when she visited the Detroit Zoo and heard about their program and inquired about it. She then came back and told me about the idea, and I worked with our directors and horticulture staff to get it implemented and started.”

The program starts in April and finishes up in November.  Experienced gardeners are required as there is no training provided by the zoo.  There is also a required orientation session that interested parties must attend, held this Saturday, February 27th from 9-11 am at the ZooVision building.

Volunteers will be required to not only select their plot within the zoo, but also submit a plan for their site.  They will as well be responsible for planting the garden, weeding, watering and maintaining it throughout the growing season, including spring and fall bed clean up.

The ultimate hope is an even more amazing landscape at the zoo, but Taylor adds “The goal of this program is to beautify the Zoo with a wonderful display of botanical flowers and colors so the Zoo is an even more picturesque and magnificent resource for our community. This is also a great way to engage local gardeners in their passion to help a non-profit, community asset.”
