Celebrate Derby Day with the Kentucky Historical Society

gov derby party.jpgLooking for a way to celebrate the Kentucky Derby with your kids, but worried about the crowds and rowdiness usually attending the event?  Well, the Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) will offer a variety of free family-friendly activities during the Governor’s Derby Celebration in downtown Frankfort, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4.

At the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, 100 W. Broadway, families can make and decorate their own Derby hats, explore the exhibit “A Kentucky Journey,” learn about the Commonwealth’s past leaders in the “Toyota Kentucky Hall of Governors” and shop for souvenirs in the 1792 Stewart Home School Store.

HistoryMobile.jpgThe KHS HistoryMobile will be open on Broadway with its new exhibition, “Torn Within and Threatened Without: Kentuckians and the Civil War Era.” It features eight Kentuckians, ranging from the famous to the everyday citizen. Through personal recollections, primary sources, authentic artifacts and touch-screen activities, students can learn critical thinking strategies and explore the difficult decisions Kentuckians faced during the Civil War. Each story highlights the importance of individual choice as a major factor in shaping Kentucky history.

ky_historical_soc.JPGThe always-popular hobbyhorse races will be held on the lawn of the Old State Capitol, while the Kentucky Military History Museum, featuring “Kentucky’s Military Treasures,” will be open free of charge.

The KHS history campus will be open for free all day (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), with special activities 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
