After rain pushed the monthly gathering into this weekend, The Flea Off Market once again reconvened in the parking lot behind Fresh Start Growers' Supply at 1007 E. Jefferson St. along Baxter Avenue. This was also the second time the flea market opened on both Saturday and Sunday, the first occurrence in November of this year.
Attendees who were looking for Christmas trees, but didn’t want to pay $200 or more for a plastic replica, could find the tree of their dreams at Fresh Start’s own stand of fresh-cut wares, ranging from $25 for a 3- to 4-foot tree for a studio apartment, to $125 for a 10- to 11-foot giant for the mansion. Wreathes could be had for $50 as well, perfect for front doors or Volvo 240 wagons.
Speaking of wagons, three food trucks were on hand for your culinary desires, whether it was chorizo/tater tot tacos with truffle aioli by ¡Hole Mole!, poutine and banh mi from French Indo-Canada, or grilled cheese sandwiches courtesy of Lil Cheezers. If that wasn’t enough, adult beverages could be had, while three s’mores stations allowed everyone to roast marshmallows and assemble their own campfire treats.
As for potential gifts, plenty of wares from various local vendors were available. For the tea aficionado, Kurdish Mountain Chai offered their own version of chai tea, taking inspiration from the Kurds in northern Iraq. For those who are hard to shop for, Sanford and Sud had plenty of random items for sale, including a Polaroid OneStep 600, Mason jars and birdhouses with retired license plates for roofs. And of course, vintage clothing, boots and accessories galore for the fashionista, with fitting rooms to try on a new outfit if need be.
Finally, attendees could drop off non-perishable goods for Americana Community Center and Catholic Charities Community Gardens Project, benefiting those in need, especially at a time such as the holidays.
