Gypsy is based on Gypsy Rose Lee's memoirs. The show features Gypsy's life in the 1920s and 1930s as a stage mother, Rose, looks to make Gypsy, once known as Louise, and sister June stars on the Vaudeville circuit.
Debra Rice Endris directed Gypsy, which also features Stephen Sondheim's lyrics, Jule Styne's music, and Arthur Laurents's book.
The real Gypsy had a successful career, particulary on the burlesque circuit, before writing her memoir in 1957. Gypsy passed away in 1970. The show itself has had its own stardom, going five times to Broadway, most recently in 2008-2009 at the St. James Theatre.
Following Gypsy, Clarksville Little Theatre will present the Neil Simon-created Rumors. Auditons for the farcical murder mystery will take place on Sept. 12 and 13 @ 7 p.m. at Clarksville Little Theatre. Males and females aged 16 and up are encouraged to audition. Mike Seely will direct the production.
