Being such a humble and modest man can be trying sometimes, as it can be quite difficult to be right so often. Yesterday morning I did my best to relay the importance of David Byrne and St. Vincent's visit to our fine city and, quite flatteringly, you actually listened. When the moniker of 'marvel' was dropped in my description of Byrne, I had no idea that seeing him live would render such a label utterly disrespectful.
Prior to the show, Byrne echoed through the speakers to encourage folks to take pictures, videos, whip out your iPad if you want, just don't impede the view of others. Quiet kind in this age of technology, but most also heeded his advice to enjoy the music and show as a human too. I managed both, thankfully for you, but I was truly blown away by the entire performance. They managed to play a lot of material off their collaborative album, work in some new songs that stayed true to the brass laden funky sound they've mastered, and even worked in some Talking Heads' delights.
The delivery of the entire set was truly remarkable. From the music, to the synchronized robotic dancing that spanned all 12 band members, to the order of the songs, everything was flawless. It is certainly up there in my top 10 of all time shows and as my tens of thousands of readers can attest, this festival snob has seen some things. Should all of my 'out of town' readers decide to pass around my gospel, do yourself a favor and catch this show. While some of the new music leads me to believe we will see more of this partnership of musical wizardry, you owe it to your soul to catch them if you have any interest in anything David Byrne has ever done because it's all phenomenal.
