If you missed the massive zombie tromp down Bardstown Road this year, never fear. Another ghastly promenade will fill the stretch between Mid City Mall and the Baxter Avenue Morgue in a couple of weeks. The annual Caulfields' Halloween Parade will take place on Friday, October 14 at 7:00 pm sharp and it is an event epic in nature.
Last year, my family of four stumbled on the parade by accident. We were on our way to the routine Friday night dinner spot when we caught sight of a flaming hearse leading a procession of zombie-esque pirates through the back parking lot of Mid City Mall. There was no doubt an immediate detour. We watched for the next hour the procession of costumes, floats, and live (dead) ones with mouths agape. The parade has a wonderful feel--like Day of the Dead meets Carnival--and many of the registered paraders put Hillcrest homeowners to shame in their commitment to Halloween enthusiasm. This year we will plan ahead and stake our spot along the entrance of Mid City Mall, cooler and chairs in tow, as not to miss the inception of this fantastically frightful and quite comical parade.
If you plan on going, bring chairs and post a spot outside your favorite Bardstown Road watering hole or at the beginning or end of the parade for optimal observation. Witness stilt walkers, zombies, aliens, rollerskaters and unicyclists, great costumes and cars, hearses and caskets and marching bands at the free parade. Don't forget to vote for your favorite spectacle in front of the Baxter Avenue Morgue. And be sure to dress the kids up early, a dress rehearsal for the big night if you will, and jump in the parade line at the end--Caufields actually encourages it.
