Family and Connections: Sire - Into Mischief, Dam - Golden Works; trained by Doug O’Neil; rider Kevin Krigger; owner W.C. Racing, Dave Kenney, RAP Racing.
Pros: Goldencents won the G3 Delta Downs Jackpot last November and returned for his three-year-old debut to win the G3 Sham Stakes. After finishing fourth in the San Felipe Mar. 9, he ended his Kentucky Derby prep schedule with a strong finish to win the G1 Santa Anita Derby Apr. 6. This horse, who’s never finished worse than fourth, seems to be improving and giving more with each performance.
Cons: Will Goldencents bounce from the 106 Brisnet speed figure he earned in the Santa Anita Derby or will he continue to improve?
Fun Fact: You’ve probably heard that University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is one of the owners of Goldencents. Pitino only owns 5%. Dave Kenney owns 20%. The majority owners, W.C. Racing (Glenn Sorgenstein and Josh Kaplan) own 75% and named the colt after their penny-auction site GoldenCents.com.
Analysis: This Kentucky Derby is loaded with talent. Goldencents is another contender with a very good chance of winning the roses. This horse has done nothing wrong and could get easily overlooked, upping his odds. Unlike other contenders playing jockey swap, Goldencents retains regular rider Kevin Krigger, who’ll ride in his first Kentucky Derby.
