Born in Michigan, raised in Florida, and now living in New York City, Diego Garcia is well traveled and well versed in music. Diego found his love at age 14 when he learned classical guitar. Shortly after graduating from Brown University, Garcia left for NYC to pursue his love of music. As a member of the now broken band, Elefant, Garcia helped pen many of the songs on their three full length albums. A new venture in solo performance is a new chapter that Garcia hopes will partially be written while on tour in support of his new release, Laura that features the first single release, "You Were Never There".
Now that Garcia is gaining attention as a solo artist, his early influences are somewhat of a distant memory. Garcia comments, "This is a bit of a departure from the music made with Elefant. This is romantic, in the sense that I believe you make something from your heart, and you try to make it original, people are going to like it." Garcia is excited about his solo career, an idea he first began to contemplate in 2005. After many years, and playing with different sounds, Garcia found the right time to embark on this journey. In 2010, Garcia disbanded Elefant and stands today in a good place as he says, "things are going well."
The first single released from Laura, "You Were Never There" brings sounds of a different generation to the present. Garcia, when asked about the single replies, "The song is lyrically centered around the idea of being in love with someone that isn't in your life anymore, getting some things of your chest, and hoping they feel the same way wherever they may be." Diego feels there is a nostalgia in the sound, both in the music and in the lyrics; a sound reminiscent of the sixties.
