My husband and I were living in Louisville for a week when we first ventured to the dog park with our Pug, Seamus. If you don't already know this, as a Louisville Newbie, the dog park is actually a great place to meet people. Regardless, I told a 20-something girl that we lived in Old Louisville and she insisted we go to the "Knock Bar". Of course, I know now that is not the spelling of The Nachbar in Germantown, but at the time that's what it sounded like she was saying.
Then I heard the mention of the Nachbar again from our upstairs neighbor. She explained it as a "hipster hangout with great beers". Then a good friend of mine from the Association of Bridal Consultants told me that the Nachbar was her favorite place to go for drinks. At this point, a college athlete, a vegan hipster, and a preppy bridal consultant had all recommended this bar...talk about an eclectic mix of Nachbar lovers! I had to go!
Last Thursday, on a gorgeous 80 degree afternoon, my husband and I ventured to the Nachbar. Half the fun is trying to find it, nestled quietly in Germantown on the corner of Krieger and Charles St. We parked on the street, right in front of the bar and walked in to a dark saloon-like building. We were blown away by the amount of beers to choose from. If you are a Belgium beer fan or a wheat beer fan, like me, it was heaven. We took our beers outside to the huge beer garden. There we found people with their dogs, extremely tattooed guys, and a few older gentlemen; all enjoying the beautiful weather and a tasty beer. We chatted with the locals and got advice on more places to go and things to do in Louisville. We loved it. I can definitely see why there was all the hype. Kudos to the owners/creators of Louisville's beer garden heaven. We will definitely be back, but next time with our Pug in tow.
