Photography has always been about documenting; to this day, documentary photography remains the most powerful application of the medium. This coming Friday, October 14, the University of Louisville will sponsor “Photography: The Document,” a conference dedicated to the relationships among photography, history and documentation.

Speakers include Shelby Lee Adams, longtime photographer of Appalachia; Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Lucian Perkins; Matt Wrbican, Andy Warhol Museum archivist; Tom Rankin, director of Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies; and photographer/filmmaker Molly Bingham, who is noted for her work in Iraq, Rwanda and Eastern Congo. Topics include “Photography and Community,” “Photography and Conflict”and “Historical Contexts.”

The conference, which is offered in conjunction with the Louisville Photo Biennial, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium. The $20 registration fee (free for UofL students) includes lunch, a book signing session and an opening reception at UofL’s Hite Art Institute, Schneider Hall.
