DROID Charge by Samsung - video review of second 4G LTE-enabled phone to come to Louisville [Technology]

Print

Welcome to the 4G LTE family, the newest device vying for room at the table – the Samsung DROID Charge via Verizon Wireless. The second smart phone introduced to the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network rocks out with the following specs:

  • Android 2.2, Froyo
  • 4.3-inch Super-AMOLED Plus display (same as on the Galaxy S II)
  • Rear 8 MP camera with LED flash, front 1.3 MP cam
  • 1GHz processor
  • 4G LTE compatible, including hotspot (for up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices on LTE, and 5 devices on 3G)
  • microSD, microSDHC
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • A-GPS
  • Accelerometer

It's the second 4G LTE enabled phone to hit Verizon and the Louisville market. I was able to take it to the streets during a hands-on review and speed-test in the newly rolled-out 4G LTE coverage areas of Louisville. Check out how the phone performed in the speed test, in addition to me reviewing the Samsung DROID Charge below.

4G in Louisville

Thanks for the entertaining, thorough review, Lewis! One thing to note is that Verizon’s 4G LTE network hasn’t been activated city-wide in Louisville yet. Verizon permanently activated 4G LTE for Thunder over Louisville and for Derby in the areas surrounding Waterfront Park and Churchill Downs, and the Louisville International Airport has recently been activated.  We expect Verizon Wireless 4G LTE to go city-wide by the end of year.

LTE Coverage Area

Any information on the coverage area for LTE? Verizion's coverage map doesn't indicate anything. The only thing I could find about the coverage area was a news post that put the East/West range between Grinstead Dr. & 22nd St. and the North/Sound range between I-265/Indiana SR62 & Burnett Ave.

It also be nice to see Sprint roll out its competing WiMax service out here.

Coverage Areas

Hey Shawn, I think what you noted is pretty much what they've provided to the general public. You can always call the local Verizon store for additional details.

Verizon hopes to get Jefferson county covered by the end of this year.

Wish I had more information to share with you.
