This happened on Nov. 24, 1962, the first year of Charlie Bradshaw’s ill-fated reign as University of Kentucky football coach. His Wildcats had just defeated Tennessee 12-10. It was the era of the “Thin Thirty.”

When I reached the UK dressing room at Knoxville’s Neyland Stadium, I couldn’t believe what was happening. Nearly all of the Wildcats had tears in their eyes – I mean most of them were bawling like babies.

I went to my fri/files/storyimages/Homer Rice, a top Bradshaw assistant, for an explanation.

“It happens every season after the final game, especially among the seniors,” said Rice. “They get to thinking how much blood, sweat and tears they have shed in four years – and how much they loved it – and for most of them it’s over.”
