Yesterday was the fifth annual Louisville Concours d'Elegance, benefitting Kosair Children's Hospital after Brooklawn Child & Family Services handed over the reins late last year, a result of funding cuts by the commonwealth that had taken its toll on Brooklawn's managing efforts. The transfer to Kosair came about due to the strong relationship between the two charities, as many of Brooklawn's children enter their campus from the free-standing children's hospital.
Porsche Racing and Cadillac were the two featured marques in this year's running, with cars ranging from a 1967 Eldorado -- owned and driven by one of its designers, Wayne Cady -- and a 1903 Cadillac Model A, to a 1972 Porsche 911S twice-championed in the IMSA GTU Class by the late father of Concours Chairman Rob Davenport, Dick Davenport, and a 1966 Porsche 910 that took its class in Le Mans while Ferrari and Ford fought it out for the overall title.
Fourteen judged classes featuring various makes from Europe and the United States, ranging from the turn of the 20th Century to the early 1970s, competed for their respective titles, as well as for People’s Choice and Best in Show. The top finishers included vintage racers, barn finds, and American muscle, with the overall winner going to a Rolls-Royce commissioned by none other than the late German-American actress Marlene Dietrich.
Special displays this year included an assembly of WWII machinery from the U.S. and Nazi Germany, an assortment of vintage fire trucks, and a camping trailer from 1948. Outside of the main event, exhibitors displayed everything from Mustangs and Cobras to Corvettes and Alfas, while Brown Cadillac, Blue Grass Motorsports, and Korbel offered their wares to the attendees.
The 2013 edition of the Louisville Concours d’Elegance will be held from the 4th through the 6th of October.
