In honor of Music Makes A City, a documentary film featuring the significant beginnings of the Louisville Orchestra, Music Director Jorge Mester and CEO Rob Birman have arranged each concert around a musically significant city. Our journey begins on Friday, September 3 with Leipzig. Birman comments, “The Orchestra’s opening gala celebrates many of classical music’s most captivating and gifted personalities, with highlights on the musical heritage of Leipzig, Germany. Felix Mendelssohn, conductor of the illustrious Gewandhaus Orchestra, debuted his much-loved Violin Concerto with the ensemble there in 1845, and we are deeply honored to have violinist Sarah Chang with us to perform the composition some 165 years later.” Fanfara also includes music of Richard Wagner, born in Leipzig, as well as some brilliant musical bonbons to round out this most festive of occasions including two pieces never performed by the Louisville Orchestra, sections of De Falla’s La Vida Breve and Puccini’s I crisantemi. Jorge Mester, conductor Maestro Mester shares his 17 collective years bringing music to Louisville as Music Director of the Orchestra. In his first 12 years with the Orchestra (1967-1979), Jorge Mester recorded more than 70 world premieres on the Louisville Orchestra’s First Edition label.
