Fans across the bluegrass are scratching their heads trying to figure out how the #1 team in the nation’s head coach could or would say, “we are the worst offensive team in the nation. ” The comment came at the conclusion of the first half where UK led the Johnnies 31-20. Apparently Coach Cal was less than impressed with the first half offensive game, hitting 3 of the first 14 shots. Cal did comment on the defensive game, “we are playing defense. ” Thank goodness he redeemed himself there. Come the weekend, the internet will have exploded with commentaries from nearly every media outlet concerning the comment.
Perhaps Cal’s frustration with their offensive game stems from the young freshmen as they transition into college basketball. In high school these guys were the stars of their teams and they did not need to communicate with other players like they do now. The starting five for tonight’s game did not include Miller, which probably surprised a lot of people, considering he was in the game when less than two minutes expired. Coach Cal is obviously trying to get the combination of guys on the floor to match the skill set of their opponent; trial by error is sometimes the only way, then again Lamb could improve his shot selection. The Big Blue Nation must be patient with this team and with Coach Cal as he refines his line-up and fine tunes the offense.
Comments on national television will not set well with UK fans. These fans are as loyal as they come and the impression that Cal is losing faith in part of the game will not bode well for him.
