The Filson Historical Society is proud to present Filson Fridays. Meet our staff as they share the results of their research in The Filson Collections. Enjoy this summer programming every Friday at noon. On August 6, Associate Curator of Special Collections Jacob Lee will discuss one Kentucky woman’s compelling story of change during the Civil War. The Civil War era was a time of transition in Kentucky. Emancipation marked the end of an era, and with the demise of slavery, Kentucky joined the Southern bloc of former Confederate states against its Northern wartime allies. The story of Ellen McGaughey Wallace, a slaveholding woman from Hopkinsville, offers a window into this world. From her support for both slavery and the Union in the late-antebellum and early war years to her hatred of the emancipationist North by 1865, Wallace’s life mirrors the experiences of Kentuckians as a whole. This lecture will begin at noon at The Filson Historical Society. There is no cost for this event, though reservations are suggested.
