I don’t know about you but I was tired of seeing the Wine Market on Bardstown Road wrapped up in brown while they renovated. Don’t get me wrong, I like Old Town just fine, but I like the bigger selection of affordable wines at their sister shop. Their meant-to-be-quick renovation drug on for weeks – months. But at long last the brown wrapping is gone and the sleek new shop is open for business.
When you first enter the new space it seems like an optical illusion. There’s no way that former cramped, dark little shop squeezed into the storefront can have occupied the same space as this bright new place flooded with natural light under soaring black ceilings. And how did
they build in a cheese bar in their new store – which is the same square footage as the old – without making it the least it crowded? Incredibly high ceilings and a profusion of sunlight pouring in will do the trick, evidently.
It feels nothing like the old space, yet the same friendly faces and generous selection of wines we can all afford are still there. On my first visit this weekend though, I passed the wine without a second glance and headed like a compass to true north for the cheese.
Cheese! I don’t have to drive across town to Lotsa Pasta or Whole Foods now for yummy, imported, fancy-as-I-wanna-be cheese. Don’t be shy about asking to sample anything you see – staff are more than willing to let you taste that pecorino you have your eye on (and it’s tasty, you’ll want to buy some).
Best of all is the Cheese Bits basket. Forget the tiny basket at Lotsa Pasta or the one shoved in a corner at Whole Foods usually only sporting a couple of cheddars. The Wine Market small bits basket is loaded with goodies priced at a buck or two. It’s like trick or treating, but better because it’s cheese, to sift through and see what kind of $20 cheese you can add to your cheese plate for a couple dollars.
I’m glad to finally be able to add the Wine Market back to my shopping rotation.
