Twice a week I take my daughter to the Floyd County YMCA to go swimming. Lately, we've been keeping tabs of the renovations to the Scribner House Gardens. Dedicated on May 8th and finished a week or so after that, these new gardens are a beautiful addition to the Riverfront and it's ongoing redevelopment plan.
Yesterday, after arming myself with an iced coffee and some free local magazines from Destinations Booksellers, I sent my kid off to swim, then crossed the street to visit the gardens.
The brick path run through fresh landscaping with young plants still growing into the space, then leads down some steps to a fountain surrounded by some rather comfortable benches.
Sitting on the bench listening to the water flowing through the fountain, reading and watching the little kids periodically visit to throw money in, I felt like I was in a tiny oasis tucked away in the city. Facing that fountain, with Downtown New Albany to the left, the Riverfront Ampitheater to my right, and the YMCA at my back, gives the feeling of being in the center of some great nexus of civilization. The eye of the storm, where it's most peaceful, sheltered from the flurry and movement all around.
I think I found my reading spot.
