Five Activities for an Extra Fun, Extra Long Louisville Labor Day Weekend
Print this page

I’ll take a long weekend anytime. I’m also greedy, so I’ll stretch that opening as far as I can. If you are inclined to do the same, let these local activities be your guide to an unforgettable three-, four- or five-day Labor Day 2013 weekend in Louisville.

Thursday: Keep Louisville Weird, Zombies

Start with a very Louisville gathering: The Louisville Zombie Attack zombie walk is this Thursday, 8/29 at 8:29. Check the Facebook page for continuing updates on pre-parties, music, contests and lots more gory fun.

Friday: Come On, Ride the Trolley

Friday evening, it’s time for the Frankfort Avenue Fat Friday Trolley Hop. From 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., businesses along the route will stay open late and feature music, samples and specials highlighting event sponsor Maker’s Mark.

Saturday: Cool off with Chocolate

Saturday afternoon, check out the Speed Museum’s NuLu satellite space and the free “Art with Culinary” class, where you’ll make your own chocolate sculptures (and then eat them, I’m hoping). From 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., you can drop in and play, no reservations required.

Sunday: Relax with Nature

Sunday afternoon, commune with nature by taking the free guided tour at the Blackacre Nature Preserve’s Historic Presley Tyler house. The tour and nature trails are free.

Monday: The Big Blowout

Today’s the big day: Labor Day. Celebrate with the rest of the city at the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Subway Fresh Fit Hike, Bike & Paddle event. Waterfront Park will be the place to be, whether you want to participate in one, two or all of the active segments in the all-day event. A few street closures will be in effect, so you could also bike to the event.

About Kachina Shaw

A transplanted Hawkeye, I've now lived in Louisville longer than any other city. Can't live without: my husband and fur babies, coal-black coffee, peanut M&Ms, sunflowers, monthly vacations, books, walking paths, massage and a big purse.
