The Floyd Theater presents 'The Breakfast Club,' 'The Lorax,' and 'Abraham Linco

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we can safely say Fall is here. The beginnings of a chill can be felt in the air – a much-welcome respite after another scorching summer. While some of us revel in the lower temperatures (it definitely wasn't me streaking in the shadows at the park the other night, no sir), others resent the bite in the air. To them, I say: go to the movies! It's a busy weekend at the Floyd Theater, so let's jump into it.

First: tonight (Thursday) the Floyd will show the classic John Hughes film The Breakfast Club. The iconic teen movie from the 1980s, it tells the story of five high school students, each representing different stereotypes, forced into detention together and tasked with writing an essay. As they interact, the social barriers break down and everybody learns a little something about each other... and themselves. The Breakfast Club screens at 5:00 and 8:00.

Friday evening begins with a special family screening of The Lorax. Based on the classic Dr. Seuss story, this updated story focuses on 12-year-old Ted, who suffers from a severe crush on a girl named Audrey. After Audrey introduces Ted to an interesting idea called “trees,” he decides the way to her heart is to find a real tree for her... and in his quest he meets the Lorax, environmentalist creature extraordinaire. The Lorax screens at 5:00 for U of L students only, plus their family members, and kids 12 and under get in free.

Regular programming resumes after The Lorax with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (recently reviewed by the one and only me). This completely ridiculous over-the-top splatter-fest stars Benjamin Walker as our country's favorite president, who discovers a plot by vampires to take over the country... but he is not about to let them off so easy. It is completely absurd. Recommended. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter plays Friday at 8:00 and Saturday at 5:00 and 8:00.

The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the student activities center on the University of Louisville campus (look for the clock tower). As usual, admission is $1.50 for U of L students and $3.00 for the general public. Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
