The Floyd Theater presents 'The Master'

Paul Thomas Anderson is an incredible director, and I'll tell you why: he extracted an actually good performance out of Adam Sandler. I would go so far as to say Oscar-worthy. The film in question is Punch-Drunk Love, and it is beautiful. It is the story of a man with anger management issues as he tries to deal with a new romance, an irate mattress salesman, and a legal con involving pudding and frequent flier miles. Mr. Anderson is also responsible for the epic Magnolia, which brilliantly intertwines several disparate stories, including one where Tom Cruise prances about in his underwear and earned an Oscar nomination.

Anderson's most recent film, The Master, has received quite polarizing reviews, with some claiming it to be the greatest thing he has ever created, while others proclaim it to be a steaming pile of horse dung. I, personally, thought it was a shoo-in for this year's Best Picture Oscar, but, surprisingly, it failed to even receive a nomination.

Joaquin Phoenix, who has never been better, stars as Freddie, a World War II veteran who is a drunkard, creating his own potent brand of booze with whatever he finds laying around. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is Lancaster Dodd, leader of a cult called the Cause, who takes Freddie under his wing. Conflict rages as Freddie becomes further entrenched in this unique school of thought and he tries to find meaning in himself and his life.

The Floyd Theater will be screening The Master tonight, Friday, and tomorrow at 5:00 and 8:00. Admission is $1.50 for students and $3 for the general public. The Floyd Theater is located on the third floor of the Student Activities Center on the U of L campus (look for the clock tower). Further information can be found at the SAB Film Committee Facebook page.
