There are some things that are just quintessentially American. Those quaint, collective stereotypes that we like to throw around for sentimentality’s sake. We all know they’re silly. Apple pie, front porch swings, those weird seasonal flavors of Lays potato chips, staunch opposition of the metric system – these are the things that make the stars and stripes truly wave, friends. But before we get too hung up on my undeniable sarcasm, let’s go ahead and crown the king of Americana: baseball! Even I’ve got a soft spot for The Sandlot, folks. With summertime coming to a close, go ahead and pay homage to that most precious of starry-eyed pastimes; former reporter, Katya Cengel, will bring the sport off the field and into the folio with her new release Bluegrass Baseball: A Year in the Minor League Life. Catch her tonight, Wednesday, August 29th, at 7pm at – where else? – Carmichael’s.
Formerly a journalist for the Courier Journal, Katya Cengel turns her reporter’s eye to the behind-the-scenes world of America’s favorite sport. Bluegrass Baseball: A Year in the Minor League Life follows the local flavor of Kentucky baseball through the eyes of four bluegrass teams. Spending a season with players, families, coaches and fans, Cengel uncovers all facets of the game and the dedication of local athletes driven for love of the sport.
Starting at 7pm, Cengel will hit up the Carmichael’s Bookstore Frankfort Avenue location to sign her new release, read selections and discuss this good ol’ slice of American pastime. Copies of Bluegrass Baseball: A Year in the Minor League Life are on sale at both Carmichael’s locations for $19.95 in paperback. Wind down your summertime nostalgia, wind up your pitching arm and let her fly. Join Katya Cengel for baseball, books and some classic sport.
Carmichael’s Bookstore has two area locations: 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue. For more information, visit the event page or call the Frankfort Avenue store at (502) 896-6950.
