Last weekend, before heading off to a day at the South Side Quarry, my best friend and I were looking for something delicious to pack along with us. Obviously we could not make our own sandwiches, what do you think we are, peasants? On our way to the quarry we stopped at Frank’s Meat and Produce, a little grocery/butcher/deli at 3342 Preston Highway. What a fabulous little place!
The deli counter was chock full of delicious looking choices, and my best friend got a big fat corned beef sandwich with Swiss cheese. Pictured above is that behemoth sandwich—she could barely get her mouth around it. I opted for a container of pimento cheese spread, some half and half lemonade and iced tea, and some Kentucky made blueberry peach salsa. Frank’s is small, but they have a great selection of fresh, local fruits and vegetables. We were tempted by big, ripe watermelons but we had neglected to bring a butcher knife to our picnic, so we had to settle for the pre-sliced fruit.
Everything was grand. The sandwich was of epic proportion, so fresh and so meaty. The pimento cheese spread was so savory-sweet I ate about a third of it with a spoon, and my husband ate half the salsa in one sitting. I was extremely pleased with Frank’s, and I can’t wait to return.
