Perhaps you're a suburban mouse, or maybe you are simply running out of activities that keep the kiddos entertained, but downtown offers many free or inexpensive family activities. Not only can you drive out the dreaded "I'm bored" but you will be supporting this growing city as well.
Free Demo Music Classes at Shine--
Today (4:30-5:15) and tomorrow (10:00-10:45), June 22-23, Shine of Louisville located at the 700 Block of East Market (the little green building behind The Green Building) is offering free Music Together classes. According to Shine's website description, "Music Together is a research-based internationally recognized Early Childhood Music and Movement Development program designed for children ages birth-5 years old and the grownups who love them." RSVP is required: 502.442.2843
My family frolicked at Waterfront Park yesterday and it was kid tested and mother approved. Bring a suit and splash in the numerous fountains, swing in the relaxing porch-style swings that line the riverbank, gaze at the brown goddess that borders our state, visit Lincoln's memorial, picnic, and play on the quite excellent playground (we think it's the best in the city). Hot dog and ice-cream vendors are posted by the playground, and yesterday they were giving away free sunscreen. A great, free time was had by all (oh, and it's a little cooler down by the river).
I seem to always tout the awe of this locale, but I just can't help it, it's that awesome. Take in a quick, free dose of the avant-garde at 21c--even with the kids. It costs nothing and it's guaranteed to stimulate some interesting conversations about the nature of art and the world. Currently on exhibit is Cuba Now, Blind Spot: the customized Art Car, The Raft, and more. Be sure to visit the bathroom and the basement, because at 21c everything is art.
Let your kids go nuts with plenty of hands-on art projects including: architecture with a variety of blocks and magnatiles, costume design and roleplaying in a Dutch kitchen, explore West African fabrics, experiment with video art, not to mention paint, draw, or cut and glue in the hands-on art room. Free for members, or free with regular admission to the Speed.
