The Louisville Free Public Library presents Galileo’s Starry Messenger: 1610-2010 at the Highlands Branch. This exhibit kicks off Thurs., Jan. 21, with a display of a full-color facsimile of Galileo’s 1610 treatise Sidereus Nuncius (Starry Messenger), the first written scientific paper based on telescope observations. This reproduction, based on a signed copy at the University of Oklahoma, is available for visitors to touch and explore and read (knowledge of Latin required for the latter).

The exhibit wraps up with a free talk by astronomer Dr. Christopher Raney at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10. Raney will discuss the effect of Galileo’s work in its time, his influences and how the pioneering astronomer laid the groundwork for today’s space program and discoveries—four hundred years later. The exhibit subsequently will be on display at the Crescent Hill and Middletown branches.

Admission is free. For more details, call the Main Branch at 502-574-1611.
