A day after taking a tumble at Churchill Downs, jock Garrett Gomez and More Than Real swept four wide and drove hard to capture the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf over favorite Winter Memories on the Matt Winn Turf Course under the historic Twin Spires.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by celebrity chef Bobby Flay, the chestnut More Than Ready filly took charge near the top of the stretch.
Pletcher was pleased.
"We had a great trip," he said. "Garett gave her a great ride and we got a jump on the favorite and I think that is all we needed."
Gomez discussed his one mile trip.
"She traveled well early," he explained. "I saw (Jose) Lezcano (aboard Winter Memories) trying to make a run on the outside. I kind of tried to make it difficult for him without impeding him and I thought we did so successfully."
He added, "She is a really nice filly, and I am looking forward to her 3-year-old campaign."
The winner paid $29.20, $9.20, and $5.80. Winter Memories returned $3.60 and $2.60. Kathmanblu paid $3.60 to show.
