Saturday's high of 59 degrees and mostly sunny skies will have the Irish ginger kids launching 2011's sunblock season at Louisville's 38th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. If you'll be merely conjuring the Luck o' the Irish, starting with sunscreen is still a great idea, especially for the kiddos reaching their paled winter arms skyward.
On Saturday, March 12, 2011, Mayor Greg Fischer invites everyone--you, your family, your neighbors, and even your restrained dog--to attend the parade. Fischer and his entourage will make their way through the parade on a float visualizing the ideal green neighborhood, surrounded by those who "sow the seeds" in a green community.
While it's too late to get involved to walk, roll, or skate with Mayor Fisher's Green float, there's no excuse not to line up to watch. The parade will start at 3:00 p.m. at the intersection of E. Broadway and will float until 5:00 p.m., ending at the Mid City Mall at 1250 Bardstown Rd.
If you can't make it to the parade, have an Irish Breakfast at St. Louis Bertrand's O'Brien Hall between 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. on March 12th, and enjoy entertainment by some of the McClanahan Irish Step Dancers. Tickets are available for this breakfast by calling Bill Riley at 502-635-6367.
If you're looking for a spiritual St. Patty's Day celebration, attend Noon Mass at St. Louis Bertrand after the Irish Breakfast.
The annual St. Patrick's Day parade is brought to our community by the the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a Catholic Irish-American fraternal organization established in Louisville in 1874.
