Greater Louisville Walk to Cure Diabetes

Print Chances are, you know someone who is either diagnosed with or affected by Diabetes. With education and research over the last few decades guiding the way to improved treatments, the goal of the JDRF is and has always been a cure. With over 1.3 million children and adults diagnosed with the disease, as well as nationwide health care costs soaring over the $100 billion mark, finding a cure is as urgent as ever. Diabetes patients are forced to deal with life-long treatments and procedures. The lucky patients are able to control it by carefully managing a diet, sometimes with “finger prick” tests to monitor insulin levels several times a day. Those with a more severe level of Diabetes have to be given shots of insulin, sometimes as many as six a day, while others live with continuous delivery of insulin through a pump- just to stay alive. Insulin is merely a treatment, as there is no cure for diabetes. And, that’s where you come in! The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has raised over $1 billion dollars in the plight to find a cure for the disease, with 85% of the funds raised going directly towards research and education. According to the JDRF “after more than 37 years, we can now confidently state that, for the first time ever, a cure for type 1 diabetes is not only possible, but likely.” Your chance to help find a cure happens on Saturday, September 13th at Bowman Field and Seneca Park. Join a team of walkers, or make your own team for this 5 K walk. Registration begins at 8:00 am, with the walk taking place at 10:00 am. Or, if you’re unable to attend, the Kentuckiana Chapter of Diabetes Research welcomes donations in the fight against disease at their website: For more information and to sign up for the walk, please visit:
