Emily Sales, Louisville.com's family and parenting writer, is in Quito, Ecuador--with her 2-year-old son, Jack. For more background on her trip, read Have baby, will travel.

Jack and I arrived late Monday night in Quito, Ecuador and we´re doing well. The airport here in Quito is one of the top five most difficult plane landings in the world. The pilot literally goes over a mountain and has to come straight back down to land on an insanely short runway (think Bowman Field!). For a moment, my fear of flying got the best of me and I thought we were going to crash into the Andes and wind up like that soccer team in the movie "Alive." Luckily, everything went smoothly and I´m here basking in Quito´s 65 degree weather instead of freezing on a mountain somewhere.

The six-hour plane ride (okay, five-and-a-half hours, but I tend to be a bit hyperbolic) went much better than I expected. Here´s another tip for those of you who are flying with babies on your lap--ask the gate agent at the airport if they can move you next to an empty seat. Often, if the plane is not full, airlines are happy to move parents traveling with babies on their laps (only kids under 2 are eligible) next to empty seats. It makes flying a lot easier because I was able to hold Jack on my lap and have all of his baby stuff on the seat next to me.

Quito is beautiful and I can´t wait tell you all about it. The people are friendly, the food is amazing and there is a ton of stuff to. Unfortunately, I´m sitting here typing on the world´s slowest computer, so it will have to wait for another day though. Tomorrow is Jack´s first birthday and we´re heading to a small, market village called Otavalo. Wish us luck traveling on a bus where people are allowed (and even encouraged) to bring their livestock, and wish Jack a very feliz cumpleaños!
