A Guide To Watching The World Cup in Louisville

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil starts today, as the first ball is played in during the opening match of Brazil vs. Croatia at 4 p.m on ESPN.

There are many advocates for soccer in this historically basketball town and you can probably find some of those people at Louisville Slugger Field in spring 2015. Here, they will be cheering on our new semi-pro soccer team Louisville City FC. Do not be confused, though—there are two soccer groups in Louisville, though not in conflict with each other.

The two different support groups are The Coopers and The American Outlaws. The Coopers have been advocating for professional soccer in Louisville and got their wish very recently with the welcoming of Louisville City FC, a United Soccer League Pro team. The American Outlaws are the local branch of a nationwide support group for the U.S Men’s National Soccer Team.

Both are making strides for the Louisville soccer—excuse me, football—community and will be rooting for the U.S. in the World Cup. There are several good places in Louisville for you to go and to cheer on the U.S. team or watch any of the other World Cup matches.

The American Outlaws headquarters for watching every U.S. national team game is the Skybar, upstairs at Saints at 131 Breckenridge Lane in St. Matthews. You can find The American Outlaws at Saints for every USMNT game, not just during the World Cup.

The Coopers have worked with Fourth Street Live to get every USMNT game to be shown on the entertainment district’s huge LED screen. This is a free event.

Other noteworthy places showing all the games: Monkey Wrench (with their additional World Cup inspired menu) and Molly Malone’s (named best bar in Kentucky to watch the World Cup by Buzzfeed),

As you would assume for a huge sporting event like the World Cup, most bars and restaurants will be showing the games, but these places are going above and beyond in celebration of the huge event. Come out and join the community to watch one of the biggest global events sports has to offer.
