Though far from a sellout crowd, the 7-8,000 people who braved the elements Saturday night to hang with Jeff Foxworth, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy got their money’s worth, especially if they bought the cheap seats. The nearly two and a half hour show was fast paced and funny—and everything one would expect from a comedy tour billed as the “Them Idiots Whirled Tour.”
Show opener and MC Reno Collier took the stage after a mildly entertaining fifteen-minute video montage spoofing sitcoms and soap operas. His ten-minute set was filled with amusing accounts of life as a father, and he did his job to warm up the audience.
Bill Engvall and Jeff Foxworthy both lamented on the perils of getting older in their half hour sets. They catered toward their middle age audience with captivating tales of being “empty nesters” and the experience that is a colonoscopy. Both entertained the crowd without resorting to foul language or off-color humor.
It took Larry the Cable Guy less than a minute onstage to “Git-R-Done,” but that was thankfully one of only two nods to his famous phrase uttered all night. Instead, Larry focused on bodily functions and the evidence they leave behind.
The crowd favorite of the evening came after each of the headliners had finished his solo set. All three came back to the stage and, provided with questions Collier had supposedly garnered from the audience before the show, launched a question and answer period. Though I’m not convinced this was a true improv session, it was a very funny half hour set.
While the floor seats were uncomfortably cramped, and the exiting procedures of the KFC Yum! Center left a lot to be desired, the evening was an enjoyable one, even if you did need a boat to take you home.
