How to Avoid Traffic After Thunder Over Louisville

Print

Thunder Over Louisville is an awesome experience, but everyone complains about the traffic. Here are a few suggestions for how to avoid and deal with the traffic in Louisville after Thunder.

1. Leave Early (before the fireworks early).

Not the most fun option, but one many Louisvillians opt for. Come for the Chow Wagon, the air show, the people watching…and then head home to watch the fireworks on tv. Don’t bother staying for half the fireworks show and then racing to your car, tons of people already do that.

2. Watch on the Indiana side of the river (and stay the night).

Have some Indiana friends with a great view? Go stay the night with them. The Indiana side of the river gets grid-locked, but not quite as quickly or as badly as the Louisville side. Some people even say the view is better from over there!

3. Walk or ride your bike!

This seems like a no-brainer,  but if you can walk or bike to the waterfront definitely do it and avoid the entire hassle of bringing your vehicle. Just make sure you bring a lock for your bike and do not wear sandals or flip flops if you’re walking.

4. Check out this Thunder Traffic Plan and plan your route accordingly.

The city does prepare for this, you know.

5. Check out these three express route maps and plan accordingly. (1) (2) (3). Also check out these traffic tips from the Louisville Metro Government.

Don’t be the jerk that’s pulling over to ask the cop directing traffic for directions.

6. Check out this list of Thunder 2014 street closures and plan accordingly.

Definitely don’t be the jerk that’s caught going the wrong way down a one-way closed street.

7. Just stay out for a few hours.

Fourth Street Live! has a few new places since you last went, and though the restaurants downtown will be pretty packed, it might be worth your time to just go get a few drinks, listen to some music and watch everyone else struggle in traffic.

8. Don’t be a jerk.

We’re all tired and sunburned and just want to get home and play with our Iphones in bed. We get it. Just be nice.

9. Don’t go.

Not the most fun option…but it is the only way to totally avoid traffic.
