Portland is the new NuLu. There, I said it.
Popular NuLu coffee shop Please & Thank You announced on Facebook today (via the Courier) that a Please & Thank You sister shop (called, simply enough, "Hot Coffee") is planned to open in Portland before the end of September. Hot Coffee will reportedly serve many Please & Thank You favorites, (including those gorgeous chocolate chip cookies) along with hot and iced coffee and pie by the slice.
This announcement comes after Insider Louisville reported earlier this week that Hillbilly Tea will be opening a second Louisville location in Portland. Hillbilly Tea is often considered an essential Louisville eatery, and opened a location in China to much fanfare and adoration in 2013. The new Hillbilly Tea will be housed in a former firehouse because no matter what neighborhood we're in, Louisvillians love to renovate garages, firehouses, and strip clubs into eateries and bars.
Earlier this week, Louisville.com reported that a new coffee and book shop, McQuixote Books and Coffee, will open in Portland mid-June at 1512 Portland Avenue. The bookstore will feature mostly used books, but will focus on carrying books written by regional authors. McQuixote Books and Coffee will be sharing space with the Tim Faulkner Art Gallery.
Gil Holland (often credited with the revitalization of East Market District, now colloquially called NuLu) is cited as a major influence for the continued development of the Portland neighborhood.
